| Established in 1904, The
Wakefield Corporation was originally in the oil-impregnated wood bearing
business. Founded as the Neveroil Bearing Company, it served the New
England textile industry for many years. In the 1930's, the porous
bronze bearing business started to develop in America and Wakefield
made the transition from wood products to powdered metal products.
During the early 1950's,Wakefield began producing structural parts
in addition to bearings. After World
War II, Nathaniel D. Clapp came to work for the company from the
Army and subsequently purchased the company. His sons, David and
Nathaniel B. Clapp joined the company in 1964 and 1974, respectively.
Both David and Nathaniel were the principals following the death
of N. D. Clapp in 1987. Nathaniel has since retired.
Wakefield is located in the suburban
Boston area where the number of powdered metal fabricators is relatively
low. Because of this, we have been able to assemble and retain a
core of experienced set-up people and operators, many with over
20 years of service. Not only are we able to make small and medium
runs profitably, our stable and experienced workforce produces a
product of excellent quality.
